Countering the horrors of Asian dog meat trade

In Southeast Asian countries, dogs are slaughtered for consumption. This encourages illegal activities and negatively impacts animal welfare, public health, and attempts to eliminate rabies. Furthermore, these dogs are boiled and skinned alive, violently beaten, choked, and burned due to the belief that the more the dog suffers, the better the meat tastes. Besides these cruel methods of torment, dogs also suffer from extreme temperatures and starvation.

To counter this, many associations, such as Soi Dog Foundation, Humane Society, and Asia Canine Protection Alliance, educate the public of the realities of the dog meat trade and rescue many tortured dogs from these areas. Animal Hope and Wellness Foundation is one of the organizations that goes directly into the dog farms in order to rescue these animals.

Animal Hope and Wellness Foundation was founded by Marc Ching. This organization rescues dogs and brings them to America, where they are prepared for adoption. During the interview, Ching explained that he disguises himself as a rich businessman trying to buy dog meat. He goes into the factories and secretly film the torments to show to the public. He then convinces the factory owners to give him dogs to “try”. He then immediately takes these tortured dogs into emergency rooms.

During the interview he stated that he faced many dangers. He was beaten and shot before.

“I would assume that I would die doing this [rescuing dogs] until a law gets passed,” he stated.

When asked as to why he risks his safety for the sake of the dogs, he stated, “We [the organization] are trying to show how important the dogs are in our lives and how they can teach us to love better […] and to give more to others.”

Currently, he is planning his trip to Yulin, China, where the annual Yulin Dog Meat Festival is held. During this festival, 10,000 to 15,000 dogs are paraded in small cages and are skinned and burned alive. He, along with many other supporters, are going to riot this festival and convince the government to outlaw the trade in and torment of dogs.

To support Ching’s cost, you could go to the Animal Hope and Wellness Foundation website and donate. You could also go to the shelter and volunteer there by washing and walking the dogs.

people that torture these dogs are idiots and should be in jail. it’s one thing to kill an animal but to torture it is plain stupid.

That is pure torture to those animals and disgusting, why cant someone take those animals out of there, and speak to president or someone to stop this If they knew how it felt to be burned skinned alive and beaten, it would not happen

While I hope this never happens to my dog, It is and has been part of their culture for a long time.

Cows are sacred in parts of the world yet we eat them here in the USA do you see them protesting us?

Dogs to us are pets- to them are a food source who are we to tell who what to eat.

I understand it makes us feel bad to see it, but leave it alone it’s not your world and it is not really that horrific our

cattle are sometimes treated the same way before slaughter you just don’t get to see it all before you eat your juicy

    steak or burger.

That comment was so unnecessary. Unfortunately, Jason M is correct. THIS nation is beyond abusive to animals in general – look at some PETA videos if you need to have your eyes opened to reality. I certainly am not condoning the torture and slaughter of these innocent dogs, but before you go calling the kettle black, you best become vegan, because we are doing the same damned thing on a vastly larger scale right here, every single day, not just during a festival.

Millions of Chinese people disagree with this practice. In fact, many Chinese are part of the movement to stop this horror. Also, many of these dogs are pets that have been stolen and a few Chinese villages have even beaten dog thieves. Personally, I disagree with eating meat. I believe it is wrong. Even in the US where there are “standards”, I do agree that animals bred for food consumption are still tortured and die in horrific manners as the animals are treated as products rather than sentient beings. However, this wrong still does not make the dog meat situation OK. Furthermore, dogs have evolved to possess innate abilities to be attuned to and bond with humans. Anyway, if people around the world want to protest Western countries’, particularly the United States, over-consumption of cow, fine by me. Actually, they should as this issue does affect the entire world, especially the environment.

Muslims don’t eat pork, Indians don’t eat beef, and Westerners don’t eat dog meat.
This means the world has so many cultures, but it is very important that we don’t impose our culture or belief to others.
Now If tomorrow Muslims tell Westerners not to eat pork, will you guys listen???

In no way am I trying to impose my culture to others. The issue is not simply whether or not the southeast Asian countries should continue to eat dog meat. The purpose of my article is to educate the community about the realities and the process of dog meat trade and to widen the perspective of those involved in this trade.

This is called the Yulin FESTIVAL but is nothing but a disguise for a torture orgy for the sick, depraved, sick, twisted and truly evil intent of this event. The govt. is accessory to and complisent to the facts. Would any one of these sub-human maggots be willing to trade places with these poor dogs. These people need to have the blessed, hallowed, sanctified supreme living shit hammered out of them for days on end. Don’t buy anything from China until they stop this disgrace to the civilized world.

Why have the facebook owners and other rich people not fully involved in this ?? hope its done ,we just do not know..but seems Marc and the organization are mostly sustained minimally, therefore they can only make little impact..they have to go there with the local authorities and have a local interpreter.. or at least donate directly,as this is a true cause, not recklessly used money, the money donated helps these people like Marc to go far and wide, treat these animals.keep and feed them it takes a lot of money to maintain. You have” a” pet and take care of ?? does it cost you money?? it does. mulitply that number of animals…God bless more power to you,if only physically I can but where is the donation site for this??

Marc is a hero … I’ve followed him for awhile now and my heart just breaks reading his stories. He puts himself right in the slaughterhouse and has had to watch the torture in order to film it so people can understand just exactly what’s going on. This guy does everything for animals and needs all the help and support people can give. Go to his web page and read about his trips and how dedicated he is to ending the barbaric festival. God Bless Marc Ching for being the voice these animals never had.

It’s not OK to slaughter animals but OK to kill people? Killing people are what wars are for and people buying China made goods are supporting this practice.

I am willing to sign any petitions against this cruelty, the US government needs to take this issue seriously and restrict the business involved in this trade. I will not support any restaurant from china or any other country that kill dogs to be use in feeding humans. I stop going to restaurants that serve china cousine over a year ago. If US people start stop buying items from china and stop dining in these kind of restaurant here, china will do something about this custom.

And that’s why we need a strong military. Because when and if they attack us they will be eating your dog in front of you. Among other things. The dogs go through extreme pain just imagine being boiled or burned alive. It hurts them the same as it would you.

There has never been any validation of any kind that dog or cat meat has health purposes. None what so ever. There is no reason for this barbaric, subhuman slaughter of animals who have been mans companions for ages. Giving even their lives for those they love without judgment, anger or anything of the sort. They are forgiving and still continue to love us no matter how they are done. We owe the voiceless and defenseless our protection and voice. Those who get rabies and the other disease should not be treated. They are doing it deliberately and intentionally. It is no ones fault but theirs who eat the animals. ANd those who steal, do so also intentionally and deliberately and should be punished. An eye for an eye. Restaurant owners especially.

Don’t be bringing more dogs into the USA! There are tens of thousand of dogs euthanized each year in the USA. If the Chinese like dog meat, the US should ship the unwanted Pit bulls that fill up the shelters to southeast Asia. Could be a win-win situation: USA gets rid of excess, unwanted dogs, the Chinese get cheap food source.

I support Marc’s efforts and that of others who have been involved in trying to stop the dog meat trade in the Far East. I’m doing my part additionally because I’ve adopted a dog that was found wandering the streets of Seoul, So Korea, a little over three years ago. I swear she is one of the funniest and sweetest dogs I’ve ever had the pleasure of sharing my life (which is probably how she survived before she was rescued). Everyone who reads the stories about the dog meat trade should keep in mind that beyond the torture aspect (which is absolutely not acceptable) many of these dogs carry parasites and some have rabies which also impacts not only caring for the dog if the dog is rescued but places humans at risk (not that this is necessarily paramount; the torture is really tough for me). When our little girl arrived at barely 5 pounds, we learned quickly that the parasites she had were part of the reason she was so thin and got sick so quickly. Once we got that under control (and we still periodically have to give her the antibiotic as she has inflammatory bowel syndrome now), she has gained weight and is a healthy 8 pounds. Everyone who meets who is smitten because she is so cute and very charming (again, how she survived so long on the streets). I stress this because I believe so many of the other dogs who are caught up in the dog meat trade have some of the same characteristics that we know in our little girl. I encourage others to not only speak out against the illegal meat trade but to speak out against the torture of any living creature especially considering that engaging in torturous behaviors including participating in the “festivals” where such action is supported is not acceptable, regardless of which continent this may occur. Encourage your local media to carry information about the illegal dog meat trade to help shine a light on this issue and do your share to challenge the issue by donating your time or your money to supporting those who rescue. Better yet, rescue one of those animals who have not been treated humanely and are up for adoption whether from the US or from those countries which are allowing the meat trade to flourish.

She’s not attacking other cultures, she’s simply trying to spread awareness about this cause. As an Asian with a culture such as this, I understand her views and her intentions, and it’s nowhere close to being aggressive or antagonistic. It’s true people have different cultures but that doesn’t mean you could make negative inferences based on other’s opinions and thoughts.
