April has been a success for auto shop students Davit Apikyan and Alejandro Martinez. After months of vigorous training and competition, these two outstanding students, accompanied by their coach Mr. Agruso, have made it to the National Automotive Technology Competition that will be held in New York on March 29 and March 30.
“I am excited and proud of myself and the whole auto shop because it was a team commitment, and I couldn’t have done what I did without everyone’s support and commitment,” said Apikyan.
In order to make it this far, Apikyan and Martinez exceeded the expectations of the competition as a whole. Martinez, who six months ago didn’t know a single thing about a car, got the highest score of all time in the written competition at Longo Toyota. On the next round they both competed as a team in Cerritos College and received the highest combination score of all time, once again breaking records.
With the win at Cerritos, the two have secured their ticket to New York. They will be leaving on March 25 and will be staying there for six days.
According to Mr. Agruso, this was not an easy win, and America’s top technicians were present at every level of the competition. The New York competition will not only be a great opportunity but also a life experience they will remember forever.
They are getting the best that New York has to offer, including a stay at a top-notch hotel and dining at five-star rated restaurants. Apikyan and Martinez will be able to visit monuments and landmarks that the city is known for.
“They will not only be visiting history but making history because they’re going to win first place,” Mr. Agruso put it.
