Last week, the ESPYS took place at the Microsoft Center in downtown Los Angeles and I was able to be a part of the red carpet. I got to sit in the grandstands and watch the famous attendees walk by and stop for interviews. The ESPYS are the biggest award show for sports and was broadcasted on ESPN until ABC took over this year due to its growing popularity.
Since I was at the event hours before the first athlete arrived on the carpet, I got to see what went on before all the magic happened.
All the media outlets were preparing for their television interviews by turning on the lights and putting on makeup. Not only was ESPN there but entertainment shows such as “Entertainment Tonight” and “Extra” were on the scene. Athletes had to go through security in a large white tent and wait in a line to get their pictures taken by the photographers and then they were announced to the crowd. Athletes would then proceed onto the carpet and partake in their interviews. What I found surprising was that there was a lot of downtime between each attendee. The attendees all did not arrive at once like the television version implies.
The best part about this experience was definitely seeing the famous athletes and celebrities arrive. Houston Texans defensive end JJ Watt was a hit on the red carpet. The crowd’s reception to seeing him was positive because he’s one of the best players in the league. Ronda Rousey, the best female UFC fighter, was also popular amongst the crowd. One of my favorite parts of the event was seeing the U.S. Women’s World Cup team arrive. The team fought hard to win the Cup and won over the nation in the process. Seeing the champions of the world was a highlight of the day.
The ESPYS are one of my favorite awards shows to watch because I like sports and I like to see hardworking athletes get acknowledged on national television. I was impressed by the positive reception received by the women’s team. They truly deserved to win Best Team because they have inspired young girls to do great things in sports. In the future I hope to see more inspiring teams win the award. I also hope to see an inclusion of other sports in the ESPYS. I feel that the ESPYS focus more heavily on football and basketball instead of focusing on other sports as well. I was sad to see very few hockey stars show up to the event. I also saw very few baseball players but that was because they were on the All-Star break. Still, the award for Best Male Athlete only had two sports represented. I think that male athletes in other sports were just as deserving as the nominees for that category. With that being said, I thought the awards show was still great and I hope to come back next year!
