Despite the somber tone set by the recent police-involved shootings, the recruit commencement ceremony at the Los Angeles Police Department headquarters went on today as planned.

As dozens of young new officers graduated on the 1st Street field, a protest in support of the Black Lives Matter movement emerged outside the headquarters in Downtown LA.

Interns spoke to new officers, guests at the graduation ceremony, and long time members of the force to discuss the implications of these events on today’s youth, and how to bridge the gap between young people and law enforcement.
