Chargers fall in title game

Citrus College was the venue for the CIF Central Division championship Saturday night. The matchup was between the Charter Oak Chargers, who are 12-1 in their league versus the San Marino Titans with a record of 13-0. The game was highly anticipated by everyone in the San Gabriel Valley and Southern California as well. It was around 64 degrees at kickoff, and both teams were ready to battle for the ring.

The Titans won the toss and accepted to differ, which meant Kamden Brown, senior quarterback, and the offense had a chance to get on the scoreboard first. They did not waste much time and scored on a 40-yard touchdown pass from Kamden to Brian Castel. The first half did not have much action on the offensive side; the Chargers only scored seven points in two quarters. San Marino on the other hand, was moving the ball sufficiently, scoring two touchdowns and a field goal. The Chargers trailed the Titans 17-7 going into halftime.

The second half started with the San Marino offense firing once again, and the Chargers’ defense continued to struggle. The Titians jumped on board first, making the score 24-7. Zion Echols, senior, answered right away with a 53-yard touchdown during the second play of the first drive in the half. The Titans’ offense answered with a big touchdown, making the score 31-14, which also silenced the Charter Oak crowd.

The Chargers continued to show heart and fight when sophomore receiver Jermaine Braddock caught a 71-yard pass from Kamden and ran it back to the house, which made it a 10-point game, 31-21. The defense again could not pass attack from the Titans and let another touchdown in. From this point on, San Marino controlled the game and took the Chargers by surprise. In the final quarter, San Marino had made it obvious that they selflessly decided to allow Chargers to score one final time to end the game with the final score of 45-28. The Chargers were defeated.

“[San Marino] made plays. They got a lot of calls that we didn’t, but they made plays. You’ve got to give them credit. We played as hard as we could, but the mistakes and penalties…we just didn’t make any plays,” said Charter Oak Coach Lou Farrar.

The Chargers have nothing to hang their heads about with the great season.

Congratulations to 2015 CIF Southern Section Central Division Champions, the San Marino Titans.
