Chargers lose season series to Mustangs

Charter Oak was tied for first in the Hacienda League and was in position to take it when starting off their series with Los Altos. However, they lost the second game of the series and fell back into second place. They would have another chance to take first place again, however, as the Walnut Mustangs were now at the top and they were next on the schedule with a two-game series.

The first game of the series was at home for Charter Oak on April 29. The Chargers got off to a quick start, taking an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. It wouldn’t last long, however, as the Mustangs would respond right away with a three-run second inning and added another to their lead in the top of the fourth to extend their lead to 4-2. CO scored one more run in the bottom of the fifth, however the effort was futile as Walnut scored two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to seal their 8-3 win and hand Charter Oak their second straight loss.

Two days later, Charter Oak traveled to Walnut for the final game of the series, and it would also be the last time these two teams would square off this regular season. This time it would be the Mustangs who got off to a hot start by scoring twice in the first. However, they would not take their foot off the gas and it seemed like they were siphoning it out of the Chargers, who just could not get things going in arguably their most important game of the year. The Mustangs would score another run in he fourth and three more in the fifth before a Charger would finally cross home plate in the top of the sixth inning. It would be a case of too little too late, as Walnut cruised to their victory and their 2-1 season series win over Charter Oak, their third consecutive loss.

Although it seems as though first place is out of the question, Charter Oak can still make the playoffs with a second- or third-place finish in league. It won’t be an easy task, as they have a two-game series coming up against West Covina and a game against Chino to wrap up the season, however the Chargers have got to want it in order to get back into the postseason for the first time in years.

Despite their best efforts, CO couldn’t pull off a win over Walnut.
