It’s hard to believe that you may be walking the same halls as the future president. Perhaps your seatmate in history class will one day win an Oscar. Today’s star athlete may be tomorrow’s Olympic gold medalist.
It may sound like a bit of a stretch, but Corona del Mar’s (CdM) alumni have proven that a Sea King can change the world.
A career in the arts is tough; survival primarily depends on creativity. One such artist graduated in 1986; the name on his diploma was Joseph McGinty. The rest of the world now knows him as McG.
McG has worked in film, (“The Duff”, “Westside,” “3 Days to Kill”) and television (“Chuck,” “Supernatural”, “Human Target”).
In his autobiography, McG looks back on his time at CdM.
“I had a lot of lonely time on my hands because I wasn’t really the best-looking kid in my town,” he said. He also describes how his family struggled financially.
Back then, he never could have imagined the success he enjoys today… Against all odds, McG pulled through. He followed his passion for the arts and became devoted to production and filmography.
When freshman Jeffery Liadfried was told that McG was a student at CdM, he said “I used to believe that only the select few who are financially privileged make it in the real world, but now I know that everything anyone sets his mind to is possible.” Liadfried also said, “knowing that McG and other great people graduated from CdM high school makes me proud to be a Sea King”.
McG’s “The O.C.” is a television series which McG based primarily on his life in Newport Beach. Freshman Jarred Kang who was a fan of the show, described it as “very relatable” and “entertaining, because of how it portrays the atmosphere and structure of Newport Beach. It also is interesting how the show seems to reflect attributes of CdM High School.”
Another entertainment heavyweight and CdM Alumni is Lars Ulrich, the drummer for the band Metallica. Lars Ulrich graduated in 1981 and formed the band shortly thereafter. Freshmen Joey Cianfrani said that “knowing Lars Ulrich graduated CdM High School is exciting, because I aspire to be in a band, and knowing that CdM brought the world an amazing drummer is truly inspiring.”
CdM alumni have excelled in athletics as well. Several former Sea Kings have become champions, including Olympic gold medalist rower Brad Lewis and gymnast Samuel Mikulak.
Mikulak has 18 career medals, including eight national gold medals and a bronze medal at the World Championships.
Since 1962, Corona del Mar High School has stood tall with Sea King pride.
