I was 10 years old when I first came to East L.A. It’s also been 10 years since I’ve seen my father. I was born in San Bernardino. It was my mother’s decision to come to East L.A. to have a better life, for her to have an opportunity to work, and for my siblings and I to have a better education.
One of my favorite places in East L.A. is Jim’s Burgers. It’s my favorite place because my family and I would go there to eat whenever we would come out from Our Lady of Victory Church, by the elementary school on Eastman. Jim’s Burgers is my favorite place because that’s when my family and I would spend time together, and it was a nice way to spend our Sundays.
Another place would be Belvedere Park, the park that has ducks. It’s also my favorite place because my family and I would spend time together in that park as well. My mom and I would walk around the pond and talk. We would also get Tutti Frutti before going to the park. Belvedere Park has a lot of celebrations. On the Fourth of July there is a fireworks show, and it’s a nice place to be at on that day. There are also shows and a library.
East L.A. is important to me and my family because we started to spend more time together. East L.A. is also important to me because all my family members are here, and everybody spends time together.
