On Feb. 22, the El Modena girls’ basketball team faced the Tustin Tillers in the first round of CIF. The Lady Vanguards played with tenacity and drive, but faced a tough loss of 72-47. Julia MacLaren led El Mo with 17 points and Hannah Marquez and Andrea Madrid followed with 10 points each.

After the first quarter, the Vanguards were down 10 points with a score of 17-7, and throughout the game, Tustin’s lead increased.  El Mo held their own in the first half, but after the third quarter, Tustin was winning 50-30. Chynna Autele, Devyn Barner, and Lily Ballesteo from Tustin were three of the highest scoring players and made the game a challenge for El Mo.

“We worked hard preseason and season to reach CIF playoffs. Even after the loss we never gave up. We can honestly say we gave it our all, win or lose we are still proud to be Vanguards”, says MacLaren. The El Modena girls’ varsity basketball team was extremely proud to make it to CIF and continued to work hard through a tough battle.
