The Neighbourhood proceeds on the path of maturity with “Wiped Out!”

The Neighbourhood’s new album “Wiped Out!” was released on Oct. 30, 2015, showing that the American rock band is not slowing down for anything. As the Neighbourhood’s second studio album, released after their first successful “I Love You” album revealed in April of 2013, it is evident that the band in moving in the direction of adulthood.

The Neighbourhood’s new album “Wiped Out!” was released on Oct. 30, showing that the American rock band is not slowing down for anything. As the Neighbourhood’s second studio album (“I Love You”, released in 2013, was their first), it is evident that the band is moving in the direction of adulthood. This is evident not only through their lyrics, but through the maturity in Jesse Rutherford, the lead singer’s, voice. The Neighbourhood has truly transformed into sounding like a much more versatile band whose work continues to be praised by the common audience.

The concept of leaving teenage life behind and approaching the gates of maturity can be seen in the band’s final track to “Wiped Out!,” “R.I.P. 2 My Youth.” This track in particular begins with an eerie, sinister beat that makes the listener feel as if they are in fact at a funeral literally saying “R.I.P. 2 My Youth.” After the first 17 seconds, however, the song picks up tempo and transforms into something that is almost frolicsome and despairing at the same time. It’s a song that expresses the memories of childhood in an eloquent manner, but depicts the need to pass from childhood to adulthood, portraying that sometimes life throws you a curveball, changing your plans for the future.

With thousands upon thousands of followers in the United States, the Neighbourhood not only appeals to Americans, but stretches far past its borders into regions like the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands and France.

After admiration and high acclaim for the Neighbourhood’s “I Love You,” especially due to the most popular song on the album “Sweater Weather,” the stage was set and the stakes were higher than ever for the aspiring band to produce something that was pure genius, and powerful enough to penetrate the listeners emotions and blow them away.

And that is exactly what they did: produced something totally unexpected and lived up to the high demands.

It has been noted by many who have heard “Wiped Out!” that “this album is an open door into adulthood, an acceptance of responsibility and a shining beacon of hope.” The album is a composition of “slow build-up melodies” and simplicity in the sense that each song encapsulates a complex problem and treats it as if it is much simpler than it really is, through the successful combination of pop, rock and hip-hop.

It is noted that “every single track provides the backbone to a story.”

In an interview with vocalist Jesse Rutherford from DIY Magazine, he prides himself on the fact that the album is all-compassing and comprehensive. “Every song has a reason to be there.”
