On Thursday night, the Chaminade High School Eagles girls’ volleyball team hosted the Viewpoint Patriots for the second round of the CIF Playoffs. The Eagles had won their first round game against Oxnard 3-1, becoming the first girls’ volleyball team in Chaminade history to make it to the second round.
The 6-13-2 Eagles came in looking to upset the 24-8 Patriots, and they knew it would be a tall task to complete. The Eagles may have gotten swept 3-0 in the match, but that score does not tell the whole story. Chaminade fought hard, and had a shot at winning each set.
When they were down, the Eagles showed resilience. With the Patriots on the brink of a victory, Chaminade senior Carolena Davidorf strung together a couple of aces to keep the game close and the season alive. Unfortunately, Chaminade was not able to pull out the set and their season came to an end
Despite the loss, head coach Pono Nuuhiwa and the Eagles have to be proud of their season. The team was much improved from their 2-22 season last year and has to feel good making it as far as they did.
The team will graduate three talented seniors, Shelby Smith, Megan Weaver, and Carolena Davidorf, but have some serious younger talents like Yewande Ilawole, Sarah Kameli, and Tori Lopez ready to make an even bigger impact next season. Look for the Eagles to continue to improve next year in 2015.
