Granada Hills’ girls golf team took the LA City Section Championships by storm and set a section record of 409, beating their record set last year of 421. Five of the girls finished in the top ten and took home the first place prize overall.

Freshman Carol Chang finished third overall and won league MVP. “I practiced really hard,” said Chang. “I think it helped that we practiced on the course multiple times and we got very comfortable with it. We prepared really early and it helped a lot.”

Coach Steve Thompson prepared the girls well for the tournament, and showed them what it takes to be mentally and physically unbeatable. “I think mentally, we are a very tough team when it comes down to it,” he said. “When the chips are on the table, the girls step up and perform. We work really hard and it pays off.”

Along with Chang finishing in third with a score of 75, Elena Gil finished fourth with a score of 80. Jo Jo Roecker and Mia Aniceto finished fifth and sixth respectively, both with a score of 82, and Arizo Beria finished tenth overall with a score of 90.

The girls will go to SoCal Regionals next Thursday at the Arrowhead Country Club in San Bernadino. They are working hard and practicing their putting and hitting. “We are just going to practice a lot and play the course beforehand,” Gil said.”That will help so we get familiar with the course and we can strategize.”

We wish you ladies luck at regionals next week. Go lady Highlanders!
