Sophene Avedissian is a 15-year-old high school student who aims to have a career in law. This inspiration rises from her recognition that public speaking, writing and critical thinking are all core to the legal practice.
Since her middle school days, Avedissian has been an active member of her school’s journalism program, where she developed her writing skills and nurtured her love for storytelling.
“I instantly fell in love with [journalism] because it combined my love of writing and also allowed me to pursue my passion for politics, local news, [and] current events,” Avedissian said.
Avedissian said one of her biggest struggles in writing is accepting that receiving backlash is a natural part of the process and that it’s impossible to please everyone with her articles. Over time, she has come to understand the importance of embracing constructive criticism and diverse perspectives.
She has learned that it is okay to receive comments and hear differing opinions, as it allows for growth and encourages meaningful discussions. She realized that it is essential to maintain her own opinions and share her unique perspective with others, even if it means not pleasing everyone.
Tania Avedissian said her daughter recognizes the value of embracing and considering all different viewpoints in her writing.
“I love that [Sophene] is always is looking for new stories or new things to write about in her school paper and loves to write about controversial topics that her peers don’t want to touch. She really dwells into them and gets both sides of the story represented,” Sophene’s mother said.
When Sophene isn’t writing and reporting, she enjoys watching comedy movies. Some of her favorites are Adam Sandler movies like “Grown Ups,” and she has a soft spot for romantic comedies like “The Proposal.”
“I’ve watched them with my family for several years so rewatching it always makes me happy and sorta relax and unwind,” she said.
Along with her love for movies, Avedissian also has a passion for cooking. She enjoys experimenting with various food creations and creating new dishes.
Avedissian’s long standing dedication to her high school journalism program has enhanced her communication skills and developed her creative thinking. With a deep rooted passion for law, she has proved she is certain to make a significant impact in the legal field.
