Subculture Extraordinary Sandwiches, the small sandwich shop with an incredibly clever name, made No. 61 on Yelp’s Top 100 Places to Eat in the U.S. for 2015, so naturally I felt the compulsion to see for myself if it lived up to this hype.
When you walk into Subculture, you are greeted with minimalistic decor and friendly employees, and a trash receptacle labeled “complaints.” The intriguing personality of the store is apparent, while the only downsides are the techno music on loop and the limited hours.
When you order your sandwich, you can choose the size, bread and what kind of meat, cheese, or add-ons you would like. All sandwiches come with lettuce, tomato, onions, peppers, sandwich dressing, and homemade garlic aioli pesto.
I went with a veggie sandwich on multigrain bread with sun dried tomatoes. I found that what I ordered was not much different than something I could easily make at home in a few minutes. However, the sun dried tomatoes and provolone cheese were what made it extra enjoyable, so I highly recommend investing in an add-on and going with this cheese option.
Looking around at other people’s orders, I noticed that the Dutch Crunch bread looked much better than my plain grain bread, and I realized that maybe I just ordered the wrong thing.
I was told that the most common order for a first timer at the shop was “5130” which consists of turkey, avocado, bacon, sharp provolone, and dressing. The cashier also mentioned that the “Godfather,” “Saxman,” and “Wicked Tuna” sandwiches are the three most popular overall.

I would recommend Subculture for a quality cheap Saturday afternoon date if you accompany your sandwiches with a $3 movie at the Regency Charter Cinema just a few doors down.
I would definitely eat here again but plan on trying out different items on the menu. Overall, I say it lives up to its 4.5/5 stars rating on yelp.
