On May 21, Mira Costa’s boys volleyball team fell to Huntington Beach as the Oilers swept the Mustangs and advanced to the CIF Division I Finals against Corona Del Mar. The match featured two teams ranked within the top five volleyball teams in the nation, according to maxpreps.com.
Trying to spoil Huntington Beach’s undefeated season, the Mustangs attacked the Oilers through juniors Jackson Wedbush and Roy McFarland, and their corner kills. The Oilers showed why they were undefeated by adapting smoothly, and showing off their polished style of aggressive and poised gameplay. The Mustangs blew a three-point lead late in the second set, giving Huntington Beach the momentum they needed to take a two set advantage.
The Oilers simply proved too dominant, taking the third set, and the match, by a score of 25-18. Due to a 24-6 season by head coach Sean Shoptaw‘s Mustangs, Mira Costa is likely to receive a bid to play in the CIF Division I State Playoffs.
