Ontario boys soccer beat Montclair 3-0 in final game before CIF playoffs

The Ontario High School boys’ varsity soccer team beat Montclair 3-0 on Wednesday to cap off their Mt. Baldy League season. The second place Ontario Jaguars, lead by Coach Harry Cruz, were coming off of a 4-1 victory against the Alta Loma Braves.

The fourth place Montclair Cavaliers, lead by Coach Sean Luebbers, came in off of a 2-1 defeat versus the Chaffey Tigers.

For the second game in a row, the Jaguars got off to a hot start. Ontario senior Christian Fernandez opened up the scoreline within the first minute of kickoff when he pinned the ball in the back of the net near the right post from just inside the top of the box.

It only took five more minutes for the Jaguars to find the net again. This time the goal came from a set piece as sophomore Jose Lara curved a beautiful corner kick into the net near the far post.

Despite being down by two goals in the first six minutes of the game, the Cavaliers picked up the pace and maintained a majority of the ball possession for the rest of the half, taking multiple long-range shots while Ontario had more success creating chances on counter-attacks.

The Jaguars went into halftime with four shots, two on goal, while, the Cavaliers had five shots, two on goal.

Cruz’s side began to again impose its dominance in the second half. The Jaguars took control of possession and created more chances than the Cavaliers.

In the 54th minute Fernandez sped past the Cavalier backline and created a three versus one situation against Montclair goalkeeper Alan Sanchez. Fernandez made a simple pass, out of Sanchez’s reach, to senior Christopher Peralta who tapped the ball in for a goal.

Ontario continued to apply steady pressure, but would not be able to find the back of the net again.

Ontario finished with 10 shots and five on goal. Montclair finished with seven shots and three on goal, and notably 17 fouls and two yellow cards.

Coach Cruz spoke of the importance of the victory, “It’s really good to get that last victory before CIF, you know, you want to keep that momentum going.”

“We’re excited most of all because of our achievement… we have to continue working hard as we have been in the past weeks and continue moving forward.” said team captain Anthony Nuñez as he assessed his team heading into the playoffs.

Ontario will play in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division III playoffs on Thursday, Feb. 18. An opponent and location have yet to be determined.
