The popular restaurant chain Chipotle announced earlier this year that it would no longer serve any ingredients that contain GMOs, or genetically modified organisms. GMOs are organisms that’s DNA has been altered to enhance it.

According to the National Public Radio (NPR), Chipotle spokesperson Chris Arnold said that it is Chipotle’s, “commitment to [serve] our customers the very best ingredients we can find.”

“I think that [Chipotle going GMO-free] is healthier and it will benefit our well-being,” said Martin Serrano, a sophomore in the Health, Science, and Environment small school about the decision.

But Chipotle has made customers believe that they cook with the “very best” ingredients.

Chipotle’s website, chipotle.com/gmo, explains the restaurant chain’s decision of going GMO free. The website reads, “It is important to note that most animal feed in the U.S. is genetically modified, which means that the meat and dairy served at Chipotle are likely to come from animals given at least some GMO feed.”

If the animals are fed GMOs, then animals and their meat would also contain GMOs.

According to Fortune Magazine, following the GMO-free announcement on April 27, a group of Californians filed a lawsuit in federal court claiming that its marketing and advertising is misleading and deceptive because they still serve GMO foods. Chipotle claims to be GMO-free, but their websites says otherwise.

Students are outraged that Chipotle is lying to their customers.

“I think it’s messed up to their customers because some [really like] Chipotle and they go there thinking that it’s a healthier option, but it’s not,” said Crystal Esparza, a sophomore in the Visual and Performing Arts small.

Chipotle should clear up this mess and admit that they’ve been lying to their customers.
