On Jan. 22, the Van Nuys girls and boys’ varsity basketball teams played against Panorama High School. For the girls’ home game, Van Nuys completely dominated the Pythons, taking the victory by a 51-point margin, 59-8. The player of the game was sophomore Mayln Omisore. She had an impactful performance, with a stat-line of 7 points, 9 rebounds, 2 blocks and 2 steals. The leading scorer for this game was junior Nayah Coleman, earning 12 points with 6 steals and 2 blocks. Captain Lena Sasagawa made her mark as well with 5 points, 8 rebound, 7 assists, and 7 steals. With their now 9-5 record, the Lady Wolves look forward to more success and victories for the rest of their season.
For the boys’ away game, the Van Nuys Wolves had a clean win over the Pythons with a close game winning, 52-47. Three key members to their victory were Kevin Hurlic, Kyle Lord and Phillip Feldman. Hurlic had a great performance with 11 points, 5 assists, and 5 rebounds. Lord also played very well, with 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 steals. Feldman’s performance in the key helped them with this victory, having 11 points and 11 rebounds. This victory brings them to an 11-8 record. With only four league games left, the team expects a strong finish.
When asked about his confidence regarding the team’s advance to playoffs, Coach Porter said, “I’m very confident about our team as we prepare for the playoffs. We have a very solid group and continue to get better every day. The guys are buying into the new culture I have established and I know we can do something very special this year.”
Playoffs begin the week of Feb. 15. With each other’s support, both squads hope for a successful playoff run.
