Madonna, Taylor Swift and BTS headlined the 2026 Video Music Awards (VMAs) with a flashy night of performances, and remembrances. The 2026 VMA’s aired live on Sunday, September 27, 2026 hosted by Snoop Dogg.
The VMAs began in 1984, broadcasted by MTV honoring the top music videos. At the time, MTV was a cable channel in its infancy, officially launching the music video genre in 1981. The award show was known as the “Super Bowl for the youth,” and the show drew millions of viewers each year.
MTV’s purpose has shifted since. It is now viewed as a nostalgic network rather than having pop cultural influence. Most music video discovery today has moved to social media platforms like YouTube, TikTok and other media platforms.
Prior to the main event, stars strutted the red carpet while cameras flashed. “Where is my Husband?” singer Raye was styled in a sheer glittering Georges Hobeika gown. Alex Warren’s outfit was not ordinary either as he brought New York fashion to the LA carpet. Paris Hilton was decked in rhinestones from head-to-toe recreating her iconic twenty-first birthday dress from 2002.
For her first VMA performance in twenty-three years, Madonna set the bar high for the rest of the night. Sabrina Carpenter joined Madonna on stage performing their collaboration and Top 100 Billboard song “Bring Your Love”. Charli XCX made a surprise cameo, performing “Danceteria Afterhours”. During the eight-minute extravaganza, Julia Garner, Seth Rogen and Sombr also appeared on stage.
Sienna Spiro stole the show, making her VMA debut performing her ballad “Great Expectation”. Spiro’s performance consisted of a solo, back up vocals and a string orchestra. She left the audience with a standing ovation and viewers wondering “Who is Spiro?”
Spiro won Best New Artist. Her mouth dropped as she emotionally accepted the award and said “I didn’t think this would happen. I actually can’t believe this.”
The VMAs also paid tribute to country singer and songwriter Dolly Parton who died in August. Kacey Musgraves honored Parton with “I will always love you”. The performance was accompanied by a montage of the singer. The VMAs celebrated Patron’s life, legacy and impact following her death.
Taylor Swift accepted the first-ever recognition of an artist for stepping behind the camera to direct her own video. As she received the Artist Director Honors, Taylor expressed her gratitude saying, “I want to say thank you to everyone who ever worked on a music video that I got to be a part of. I learned something from every single person who worked alongside me on these projects”.
The award ceremony reached 8.43 million viewers in the United States, which was the highest in record since 2015. Viewership was up 51% from 2025 proving that despite being an era dominated by social media, the VMAs still hold a strong influence in music culture.
