Deep space. Dying stars. A global mission to save Earth. One unlikely voyager: an amnesiac middle school science teacher.

Published in 2021, Andy Weir’s novel “Project Hail Mary” has become a staple read within the modern science fiction genre. The story follows Ryland Grace, a disgraced molecular biologist-turned-teacher, tasked with saving humanity from the brink of extinction soon after the discovery of a catastrophic astronomical phenomenon.

Directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller and adapted for the screen by Drew Goddard, Weir’s story is now hitting theaters with a small but powerful cast of actors rallying around Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) in the largest-ever global effort to save the only place civilization has ever called home: Earth.

Ryland is also flanked by Eva Stratt (Sandra Hüller), a utilitarian task force manager employing the world’s resources to ensure the mission’s success, along with Rocky (James Ortiz), an unlikely ally Ryland encounters while floating through the unforgiving depths of outer space.

Masterfully intertwining comedy with nail-biting dramatic sequences, “Project Hail Mary” manages to stay loyal to the source material that first endeared readers to Ryland’s journey and his friendship with Rocky. Much like the novel, the film also alternates between Ryland’s present mission and the months leading up to it.

“I wanted to tell the story in such a way that you’re experiencing things from all of the characters throughout the entire book,” Weir said. “[It also] allowed me to front load Rocky more because that’s the core relationship of the story.”

Weir, whose 2015 novel “The Martian” takes place on Mars and was also adapted into a movie featuring Matt Damon, spoke of space as a recurring setting for his stories.

“I’m just a science dork, and space is just really cool. I mean space and spaceships and technology,” Weir said. “From a narrative point … if you screw up, you’re just gonna die, and you’re too far away for anyone to help you. It makes the stakes a little higher.”

Indeed, the fact that the Ryland spends a large part of the story alone gives audiences a deeper insight into his unforeseen ascent to space.

“Ryland was originally a speculative xenobiologist and he made a very unpopular paper, and he got kind of booed out of academia from that and that affected him… “ said Weir, “so he retreated to a [teacher] profession where no one would really challenge him. ”

But this is precisely what makes Ryland such a compelling protagonist — one who is thrust into an Earth-saving mission with no recollection of the past and yet proves to be more capable than he ever thought himself to be.

Guided by scientific principles and witty humor, at its core, this is a refreshing film about the unwavering spirit of living beings, both human and alien, when confronted with the unknown.

In what otherwise feels like a bleak landscape, “Project Hail Mary” offers a much needed oasis of hope. One that asks: what can happen when humanity — and one man — give themselves just one more chance?

“Project Hail Mary” releases in theaters on Friday, March 20.
