Civic involvement is extremely beneficial for the development of young adults.

According to Youth.Gov, recent studies found that among youth, volunteering plays a valuable role in shaping how youth learn to interact with their community and develop the skills, values, and sense of empowerment necessary to become active citizens.

There are various ways for teens to get involved in their communities, such as volunteering at local park events, volunteering at food banks, helping with trail maintenance, or even getting involved in a political campaign, such as knocking on people’s doors. Through these interactions, students develop a variety of lifelong skills. Participating in these events can aid them in networking with others and build valuable connections with political leaders. This can instantly boost one’s confidence and self-esteem, providing a sense of purpose and achievement that can motivate one to further civic involvement.

Additionally, there are many unforeseen benefits to getting involved in the community. The study adds that students who engage in voluntary community service are 19% more likely to graduate from college and have a 27% higher chance of employment. This increase may be the result of the sense of purpose and feedback that being involved in one’s community can bring, In other words, it is easier to believe your choices and decisions in other aspects of your life if you can experience it directly in some way.

Ultimately, youth volunteering not only benefits communities but also helps one develop personal skills essential to achieve their goals and aspirations.
