From inaugural poems to the songs we listen to, poetry is all around us. We just have to allow ourselves to see it.
Poetry can and has had a tremendous impact on our society. Still to this day, I believe poetry can impact lives in a positive and thought-provoking way that stems change between one another.
We see wars, fights, and prejudices that separate us and hold us back from truly understanding and being compassionate toward one another.
What if poetry is a better way to communicate and bring about change in our mindsets and with one another?
Amanda Gorman is an American Poet, Activist, and the first National Youth Poet Laureate. Gorman recited her poem “The Hill We Climb” at President Biden’s inauguration.
This poem was finished shortly after the riot at the capital where violence was used to express their anger instead of being accepting and moving forward.
Gorman’s poem is about making America better through unity and collaboration. Her poetry is powerful and full of hope, sparking motivation for togetherness.
Instead of using violence we can take a second to think about our own feelings and others feelings.
Poetry is a common ground for expression whether it’s for yourself or for others to hear and communicate.
You can find poetry just by looking at the beautiful world God created through his word, power, and love. Nature and all its beauty. People and all our uniqueness.
“The lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need. He lets me rest in green meadows; he leads me beside peaceful streams. He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths, brining honor to his name.” (Psalms 23:1-3)
This verse is very poetic and uses symbolism to show how God loves us.
The first song that truly spoke to me as poetry was “Fast Car” by Tracy Chapman. This song paints a picture of two people in love trying to fly away.
Metaphorically, they want to fly away but in reality, all they have is a fast car. Two people are given backgrounds and raw emotions, that people might connect to in some way.
Poetry can tell a story through thoughtful and fruitful words that carry more meaning for some than others.
This is what makes poetry so personal and convicting. The rhythms that are used in poems are intense and captivating.
Poetry has the possibility to influence our generation for the better.
This is why I believe poetry is one of the best ways to express yourself and make a change in our society today.
