Each month brings awareness to a cause that impacts lives across the world. October is nationally recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month — a time to show solidarity, educate, and support those affected by breast cancer.
At my local dance studio in Los Angeles, Marat Daukayev School of Ballet, the community came together in a meaningful way to highlight this cause, especially in honor of one of their own.
Dancers were invited to wear pink leotards during class on Oct. 19 as a symbol of awareness and unity. It wasn’t just about changing dress code — it was about showing up for something bigger.
Miss Allison, a cherished teacher at the studio, is undergoing treatment for breast cancer. Her strength and resilience have inspired the entire Marat Daukayev community.
“It felt nice to bond with the studio and feel like we are supporting people in our community,” said Leah Weissman, a Level 6 dancer.
Allison’s journey is featured in a moving documentary “Ballet in Cleveland.” You can hear her story and see her courage on Chilean TV network El 13: “Sueño americano” con Peter Murphy | Temporada 1 | Capítulo 5.”
Together, the dancers’ reflections highlight how a small gesture like wearing pink can build community and raise awareness — all while doing what they love: dancing.
“I was happy that I could visibly support and that everyone did it collectively,” said Level 6 dancer Lila Chaudhary-Kim.
The studio is also encouraging families and dancers to take real-world action by donating to reputable breast cancer organizations that fund research, provide treatment support, and offer hope, such as Komen and LA Goes Pink by the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
At Marat Daukayev School of Ballet, this month wasn’t just about dancing. Instead, it was about dancing with purpose. Through awareness, support, and community, the studio is proud to participate in the fight against breast cancer — one pink leotard at a time.
