Gaming, not with consoles but with boards.
With just $5, GameHäus offers customers an opportunity to play board games as long as they wish, that is until closing time. Although it is closed on Mondays, they offer a $2 deal between Tuesdays and Thursdays before 4 p.m.
Co-owned by Robert Cron, GameHäus began in 2010. By June 2013 and after their successful kickstarter, GameHäus nestled into a 1920s building in Glendale soon to be roaring with board games.
“We started this place because it didn’t exist,” Cron said. “This is the place we would have wanted to go to as gamers. It was a nice synthesis of what we wanted to do.”
There are traditional games like Monopoly and Jenga but why not choose from the 900, and counting, game pile GameHäus offers.
For the vintage game admirer, the 1927 bug-building game, Cootie will surely entertain.
For the adventurer, “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” Deck Building 2014 game sets players through the long and treacherous path to Lonely Mountain.
Outside food and beverages are banned but GameHäus has a café available filled with a savory menu. Recharge with an iced latte or the popular Werewolf sandwich crafted with roast beef, cheddar and Sriracha hot sauce.
Even though GameHäus is college oriented, their customers range from 5 to 80 years of age. That’s no surprise since they feature family classics like Candyland, or for the more mature, Cards Against Humanity.
“Playing is universal,” Cron said. “We want to re-introduce newcomers to a hobby they haven’t done since being a child. Even if you played as a kid, you can still play as an adult.”
For certain, GameHäus is reconstructing what it means to be a gamer.
