If you’re an avid book lover, you’re probably familiar with books such as Harry Potter, Twilight, The Color Purple, The Hunger Games, The Fault in our Stars, The Great Gatsby, Pride and Prejudice, IT, and the Lord of the Rings. There are a multitude of books that are readily known in the book community. Despite the abundance of books, only a few reach a point of renown. I’d even say only one book reaches the greatest point of renown: the Holy Bible.
So what makes the Bible the greatest?
Its distinction.
The Bible is the best-selling book of all time, with between five and seven billion copies in circulation. It consists of 66 books separated into the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Scriptures are the foundation of the Christian faith as they are “given by inspiration of God,” implying that they originate from God and are given to guide those who believe.
It is the one book that describes the creation of all things in the world (Book of Genesis) and the events that are to come in the world (Book of Revelation). It is constantly referenced in literature, music, politics, and paintings.
The Bible is the direct source of the most popular faith in our world and Jesus’ teachings have made a prominent impact.
Jesus calls for all those who believe to abandon everything they know and to deny themselves. Human nature contradicts God’s ways and the Holy Scriptures expands on this by showing the contrast between humanity and God.
The acts that we do on the daily are considered evil in the eyes of God. When someone truly follows Jesus and his commandments there will be an apparent transformation of their character as God’s ways are distinct – holy and higher from our ways.
In the Old Testament, the Jews were under a law once Moses sprinkled Ram’s blood on the commandments and the Israelites. This old law revealed the sinful nature of humans and we were all bound to death. Thankfully, we Christians believe that God had a better promise for us, by sending down his Son, Jesus Christ. The crucifixion of Christ gives us victory over death by the promise of eternal life.
As Scripture says in Romans 7:6, “But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in the newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.”
It’s ubiquity.
Despite differing religious beliefs, the Christian faith is widely known in the world. For example, the Gregorian calendar is used in most parts of the world and it is based on the birth of Jesus Christ.
The terms “Anno Domini” (AD) meaning “in the year of our Lord” in Latin and “Before Christ” (BC) was first proposed in the year 525 by Dionsynius Exigus, a Christian Monk. The terms were standardized under Julian and Gregorian calendars and eventually became widespread in Europe and the Christian world.
Much of history is founded upon God and interwebbed with religious aspects. For instance, the Divine Right of Kings theory, and the official motto, “In God we trust” on America’s currency.
No one can look back on the past in search of history without coming across a foundation of faith or God. Even presently faith is our foundation in our world, and biblical principles are engraved in our society.
From the customs of marrying in church or having a priest officiate a marriage, treating others how we want to be treated, praying in times of distress, and pledging allegiance to the U.S. with the notion of “One nation under God,” Christianity is cemented in culture.
Everyone is aware of the Bible and the Scriptures that it contains or has heard of Jesus.
The world was created by God and all things point to God’s existence.
This truth is found in Romans 1:20, “For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse.”
It’s timelessness.
The Bible has been talked about for ages. No matter the generation, the Bible always sustains its level of influence in the world. As of 2024, Bible sales have been on the rise by 22%. Individuals are anxious about the state of the world and seek the Bible to gain hope.
The Scriptures are filled with wisdom and truth that are relevant to our world today. Anyone can pick up a Bible and learn from it, despite their beliefs.
The Bible holds its place as one of the most popular books. It is studied by scholars, students, teachers, and kids. It is a book for all who choose to read it. Its timelessness is one of the main factors of its renown.
Scripture states, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away” (Matthew 24:35).
I think that the Bible is the most incredible book ever written, as it encompasses wisdom, moral principles, hope, love, insight, and much more. The words of the Bible hold weight and value. It can transform a person inside out for the better.
Reading the Bible gives me joy and sustains me in a supernatural way. No other book gives me the peace that I receive from the bible. It is only God who can give peace that surpasses all understanding.
The Bible uplifts me, rebukes me, keeps me, directs me, and fills me all the days of my life.
For it is said in Scripture, Hebrews 4:12, “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”
It is a book of a powerful promise: eternal life. For the promise of God is without repentance and it is a hope to all who take hold of faith and believe in his word.
