On July 19, 2024, at 04:09 Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), the worst technological catastrophe occurred, affecting millions worldwide. Banking systems were paused, flights were grounded, grocery stores failed to process transactions, and local municipalities shut down. What appeared to be a routine update— a sensor configuration update to Crowdstrike’s security features in Windows machines— quickly triggered a crash in digital communication systems, inventory systems, financial systems, and more worldwide.

Crowdstrike is a cybersecurity vendor company that helps systems to detect and block hacks. The system error began on July 19, 2024, when Crowdstrike published a new update on its software. It was a regular update but significantly impacted updated systems. Running Falcon sensors for Windows 7.11 and above, systems that got this update were susceptible to a crash—the blue screen of death. This update has caused a massive global problem for the UK, USA, India, Germany, and the Netherlands.

This event affected millions of window systems and caused many US companies to lose almost 5.4 billion USD. It included some of the biggest airline companies in the United States, such as Delta Airlines, United Airlines, American Airlines, Spirit Airlines, and Allegiant Airlines. Due to the technical issues caused by Crowdstrike, Delta Airlines lost 380 Million USD because they couldn’t get their system fixed for almost a week. United Airlines had to cancel 694 flights on Friday July 19th, and, in addition, 713 flights were canceled that weekend due to the IT outages. Airlines, especially Delta Airlines, have faced the most severe damage from this IT outage; the company blamed the problems on Crowdstrike and Microsoft and took legal actions but got rejected.

The event affected the airlines and banks worldwide in Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, and Britain. Bank systems have experienced system interruptions during their services. The impacted banks due to these outages include bank of America, Wells Fargo, capital one, TD Bank, US Bank, etc.

This event affected customers and some of our commonly used websites. For many students, Aeries is an essential online platform for picking classes and checking grades. However, due to this outage, Aeries completely crashed and was not fixed for some time.

Subsequently, on July 22, 2024, Microsoft published a recovery tool that was targeted to fix the system crash caused by the crowd strike’s outage. Until today, crowd strikes have fixed 99 percent of the issues. Crowdstrike has faced severe consequences due to its outages, including a massive drop of 37.57 percent last month, a loss of 20 billion of its market value, and a class action lawsuit over travel disruptions.

In the National Basketball Association (NBA) today, flopping, the act of exaggerating contact to draw fouls, remains one of the league’s most debated issues. Under current NBA organization rules, an official can assess a non‑unsportsmanlike technical foul on a player...
