Every day, there seems to be an innovation through the use of AI that will reinvent the wheel in any given industry. On Sept. 30, 2025, DoorDash, the multibillion-dollar food delivery giant, continued this trend by unveiling its latest creation, Dot. In an industry that has not yet widely adopted AI robotics up to this point, the release of this technology may just reshape the commerce and food delivery industries.

To understand Dot’s impact, it’s crucial to first define what it truly is and the role it’s built to play. This 350 lb, 4 ½ foot bot is surrounded by nine cameras and seven different sensors. With this frame, Dot is able to reach max speeds of 20 mph and hold up to 30 lbs of cargo.

This in itself is ultimately what separates Dot from other competitors who have previously adopted an AI-based food delivery model. In fact, Dot’s max speed outshines that of similar robots from companies such as Coco Robotics and Serve Robotics, Uber Eats’ current partner. Additionally, other companies host bots that are specifically reserved for traveling on sidewalks, unlike Dot, which can travel through a variety of terrain aside from sidewalks, including roads and bike lanes.

For now, DoorDash is not planning to completely switch to Dot for all delivery services, but rather go forward with a hybrid model in which Dot is used alongside human employees for deliveries. At this time, Dot is only being deployed and tested in the greater Phoenix area. However, CEO Tony Xu has stated that Dot is expected to roll out in “three-to-five-mile-dense suburbs” in locations like the Bay Area, Denver, and Dallas.

While DoorDash’s innovation is amazing, Dot comes with its fair share of issues that must be confronted and explored. To start, Dot is claimed to be able to traverse through bike lanes. However, when accounting for the fact that the bot is nearly three feet wide, it is not too practical, as it can significantly hinder bikers traveling on the same path. As well as this, robots of a similar nature have struggled to react accurately to bystanders and first responders.

With all of this being said, it’s important to understand that Dot was just released at the end of September, and many of these claims are based on pre-existing data from previous robots. Because of this, there has been a lot of time for Dot to improve and break away from the standards set by other previous innovations with a similar structure.

Ultimately, this all leads to the fact that Dot is an example of the next step for the local commerce industry. This will prompt other competitors to step up in an attempt to dethrone the already largest existing food delivery company in the United States. Beyond just promoting innovation, it also directly threatens several other companies and is already showing evidence of this. In fact, Instacart, a giant in the grocery delivery department, has already had its shares drop 10% following DoorDash’s dual announcement of a Kroger partnership and the Dot rollout.

Although Dot still has a long way to go, its future is bright and represents a small glimpse of the current major wave of industrial AI transformations.
