In a life where chance is often the privilege of a few, Kicks4aCauz seeks to level the playing field—both literally and figuratively. The non-profit initiative was established from a high school student’s love for fitness and fairness, aiming to promote sports among underserved children by providing them with one basic need that is often overlooked: proper footwear.

The vision of Kicks4aCauz is straightforward yet profound.

Many children residing in disadvantaged areas have an interest in participating in sports, however, lack appropriate athletic shoes. These children are not only denied access to athletics but also miss out on physical health benefits associated with regular exercising.

Refurbished sporty kicks are given out by the organization to foster self-esteem, confidence and belongingness among  young children. Kicks4aCauz enables this community to enjoy recreational activities on an equal footing with their more privileged counterparts.

The history of Kicks4ACauz dates back to when it was just an idea about collecting shoes through a drive. Boxes were placed at different points throughout Orange County, including Motion Fitness, Mariners Church and the Quail Hill Community Center. The response from individuals donating athletic shoes proved overwhelming support which indicated a collective willingness towards supporting the cause.

In five months alone, hundreds of pairs were collected and then refurbished before being distributed anew.

Once the shoes were cleaned and soles were repaired, the next phase involved distributing them to places where children would receive them at zero cost, including OC Rescue Mission and Boys and Girls Clubs.

The impact produced was described as immediate.

Children were motivated to involve themselves in athletics. In turn, opening doors towards active involvement and fostering a sense of discipline and teamwork—traits which are needed throughout their lives.

However, Kicks4aCauz is not just about giving out shoes; it’s also focused on inspiring children to stay active beyond high school so that they may reap the full physical and mental gains associated with physical activity. Research shows that participating in sports has the potential to improve academic performance and social skills, while raising a student’s self-worth.

Kicks4aCauz demonstrates the power communities possess and what can be achieved by acting together; simple ideas backed by empathy and strong will often bring lasting change. The organization hopes more people will contribute towards its goal, knowing that each donated pair could serve as a stepping stone towards granting a little one’s dreams.

Opinion: What we choose not to see

Heads on asphalt under the scorching sun — concrete pillows so hot you could fry an egg on them. People huddled under tarps whipping in the ocean breeze. Kids tucked away into shadowed alleys.  All pushed aside for the sake of keeping a clean, happy, coastal...

Opinion: How sports shape early development

When I think about school, I think about the usual academic subjects like math, science, history, language, and social studies. They’re all important, no doubt. When it comes to a well-rounded education, though, especially in early education, something has always felt...
