In a long-looked for triumph for gay rights, the Supreme Court decided on June 26, that the Constitution ensures the privilege to same-sex marriage. Instituting another civil right, allowing gay marriage, advocates a triumph that until as of late would have appeared to be unimaginable.

At the Supreme Court hearing, Justice Anthony M. Kennedy wrote the majority opinion, 5 to 4. As imagined, when the result was announced, there were smiles all around, with crowds of same-sex marriage supporters outside the Supreme Court in Washington. The U.S. is currently the 21st nation to sanction same-sex marriage across the country, including domains. Married gay couples will now appreciate the same lawful rights and advantages as wedded hetero couples across the nation and will be recognized on ‘official documents’ like birth and death certificates.

Many gay couples who have long battled for equivalent treatment under the law celebrate today in triumph! On this day, June 26, 2015, is a day that will be remembered for centuries to come. In a country so diverse likes ours, we must remind ourselves that we are all created equal.

“When all Americans are treated as equal, no matter who they are or whom they love, we are all more free”- President Barack Obama.
