Asian Americans are unfortunately one of the least likely populations to seek mental health care. Many barriers prevent them from doing so, including cultural stigma and the lack of awareness and access to resources.
at the dinner table
there is pho and banh mi
warm in bellies—
but no medication for minds
struggling to grapple
with the reality of their thoughts
at the dinner table
there is bibimbap and bulgogi
full of love and fragrance
but no one dares say,
“something doesn’t feel
right in my head“
at the dinner table
there is dal and naan
blessings showered with ghee
but when the spiral starts
you hear—
“pray harder.“
at the dinner table
there is congee and dumplings
red notes lined with embrace
you musn’t ruin it with sorrow
and shame your family
at the dinner table
there is adobo and sinigang
you hear garlic swirling in air
but you can’t admit
“I cried 10 minutes ago“
So you laugh and continue
to laugh
Even when it hurts
to smile.
