The basic requirements of student health are studied, such as a stable environment and nutrition, and related to how that can affect education and the ability to learn.

Students in today’s world at all ages need basic requirements to receive and gain their full academic potential. Some of those needs include a stable environment to complete homework and obtaining proper nutrients from one’s diet. The requirements previously listed may seem like basic, obvious necessities for any human being, but when it comes to the average student, the majority are not meeting the requirements that will lead to overall academic success.

A stable environment to complete homework or study is needed for a student to achieve their complete academic potential because it gives students a place that encourages learning. Motivation in the lives of students is a large factor that goes into whether or not they will succeed in their academic careers. Having a stable place to complete their assignments is a factor that promotes success in their educational careers. Whether this stable place is a house, office, or possibly a tutoring center, some sort of stability in the environment aspect is essential.

The National Low Income Housing Coalition conducted a study demonstrating that the primary indicator of a student’s chronic absence from school is housing instability. The NLIHC found that an insatiable home life was directly correlated with a student’s decreased attendance and lower grades when compared to classmates. While this may seem fairly obvious, there needs to be a solution for those students who do not have the stable home life their classmates are lucky enough to have.

One answer: tutoring centers.

I volunteer at a tutoring center in my community that is free of charge. Parents can drop their children off after school for them to work with teachers and volunteers to complete their homework. This gives students stability and a safe place to do homework and study while their education is being promoted by the structure of their lifestyle.

Another factor that goes into whether a student achieves academic success is their diet. Nutrients and proper amounts of food intake have been proven to directly correlate with success in education. The National Library of Medicine conducted a study on the “Association between Dietary Intake and Academic Achievement in College Students.”  The study found that students who were gaining adequate amounts of nutrition from their diets were more likely to be productive and achieve higher levels of success in their academic careers.

The nutrients that are needed daily are typically fruits, vegetables, grains, proteins, and dairy, as mentioned by the National Institute on Aging. These food groups properly result in overall better brain function and set up students for better success not only in their well-being in life but also in their education.

While it is easier said than done to gain proper nutrients in daily life — as it is an expensive task to complete — there are ways to achieve dietary success like by going to local food banks, community or government assistance programs, or food rescue programs. These options vary depending on the community you live in, where Share Our Selves located in Orange County does an amazing job at feeding healthy foods to citizens.

Overall students need to have achieved several basic needs to support their academic or educational journeys. Proper nutrients and home stability are simply two examples, yet there are many more ways to give students proper success. These solutions not only set up students for academic success but also success in their overall lives.
