The winter sports season is a time for soccer to shine, basketball to reach new heights, and girls water polo to dominate. These sports thrive in this season, fueled by Mira Costa’s fierce and raucous student body. But this year, Costa welcomes a new athletic program to the winter agenda: boys rugby.

Last year, Costa students and parents formed a Rugby team at Mira Costa, drawing athletes from programs such as Football and Lacrosse. Despite winning the championship, the team remained officially unaffiliated with Costa for the entirety of the season. This year however, Costa has claimed it as an official sports team of the school, and the potential for growth continues to build.

Proceeding the football season, many football players transfer into rugby, and utilize similar skills to give the team success. The sport calls for quickness, toughness, and heart – pure athleticism.

Despite the hard hits and fierce nature of the game, the chivalrous morals remain present throughout – a rarity in modern athletics. The boys bond not only with each other, but with their opponents, constantly commending them on their hard-fought games.

The team has played one game already, proving their eliteness by defeating Stern Mass 56-10. With such a resounding victory in their first game, the team has set the bar for a promising season. Having a championship already under their belt, the Mustang rugby team aspires to claim back-to back-titles.
