Charter Oak is usually known for sending football players to the next level, however, senior soccer player Angel Aguirre is helping to change that. On March 17, Aguirre signed his letter of intent to play for Marymount California University, an NAIA school that is ranked third in the nation.
The signing took place in the Charter Oak library, where it began with an opening statement from athletic director Dominic Farrar.
“It is an honor for us to get you serve and represent your family, your coaches, your community, and a part of you is going to build that legacy when you go to the next level,” said Farrar about Aguirre. “We thought it was only appropriate to celebrate your successes and commend you for your achievements. On behalf of everyone of us we are very proud of you, and on behalf of our administration and community we’d like to congratulate you.”
Aguirre will be joining a stacked Marymount team, as they made it to the Final Four last year before losing to no. 6 Davenport. The Mariners are looking to build on their success and go even farther this year. They expect nothing but the best from Aguirre.
The Marymount coaching staff is looking for Aguirre to compete for a starting spot immediately.
“We saw a lot of potential in him,” said Marymount Assistant Coach Isidro Torres. “So we thought we could get him to come in and contribute from the beginning.”
Besides the soccer program being ranked no. 3 in the NAIA, there were other factors that drew Aguirre in choosing Marymount.
“I went to go visit the campus and it was a lot similar to Charter Oak in size and the location was beautiful, the people were also very welcoming,” he said. “This is a new opportunity to continue working towards my goal of becoming a professional soccer player. I’m excited to work hard and take advantage of it.”
