Many of the outsiders that don't know East Los Angeles see it as a terrible community. They have these images of cholos walking around, Mexicans filling up the community, or students dropping out of school. The insiders defend their community. They will prove that...
Christine Vazquez
Christine Vazquez, a senior at the East Los Angeles Renaissance Academy at Esteban Torres, represents the student body by voicing their opinions in her position as student body president. Others describe her as being goal oriented and dedicated to her education and achieving her goals. She is currently training for her fifth L.A. Marathon and has received the Girl's Build L.A. scholarship. She was inspired to run her first marathon, being only 12 years old, by her older sister and has loved it since then. Running the marathon isn't her only greatest accomplishment, but receiving the Girl's Build L.A scholarship is as well. She worked on a nine month project where she created a Virtual Reality goggle that allows students, who don't have the funds, to visit universities from the comforts of home.
She is extremely grateful to her family, teachers, and friends who have supported her in this journey. Being a student athlete isn't always easy since it's time consuming, but the journey makes the experience enjoyable. She strives to be a transportation civil engineer, the reason being because there is a lot of traffic congestion in her community. Her goal is to reduce traffic congestion in the freeways and expand an eco-friendly public transit.
