Ismael Miranda

Ismael Miranda

Ismael Miranda is a senior at East Los Angeles Renaissance Academy, one of the five high schools on the Torres Campus. To his friends and acquaintances he is mostly known as Carl because of his curly hair resembling Carl from Jimmy Neutron. That, and the fact that many people don’t know how to pronounce his name right. In the fall of 2017 he will attend college and major in Psychology. Ever since he was a kid he has been fascinated by science but recently he has been passionate for Psychology, the scientific study of the human mind. The human mind is interesting to him in how intricate and complex it is and he wants to help heal those whose minds have been damaged by their psychological wounds, however big or small they are. He cares for people and always wants to help. In addition to English he fluently speaks Spanish and Sign Language. He lives with his two parents and five siblings. His youngest sister Kathy and only brother Jorge are both deaf, this is where they sign language comes in handy. One of my other sisters just graduated, class of 2016, and has gone up to UC Merced. He is currently on the Academic Decathlon team for his school, they are currently majoring in WWII. He finds all the science, music, art, and economics of the war really interesting. He’s dived into WWII before but not as deep as they do in Decathlon. In the class they learn the most insignificant information of that time period to the most important. He finds the class really interesting, diverse, and electrifying. Well, maybe not the music lessons. But he really loves music. He listens to every type of genre and doesn’t really have a favorite. If he’s not in school you’ll usually find him at home doing his school work, playing video games, listening to music, or just looking through social media and seeing what’s going on in the world. Did I mention he also has a dog named Rocky?

Rudy Escoto: The heart of Los Cinco Puntos

It was a hot and humid that Friday afternoon. I had just left school and was going to head to Los Cinco Puntos with my Dad. When we got there it smelled like cooking meat and you can hear it sizzling. It wasn’t really busy at the moment. I asked a man in the front who...

My community is my identity

My community is my identity

Every day when I walk out of my house, I can smell the fresh, new tortilla chips being made up the street. Many people are impacted by where they live and how they live. I, and everyone else in this community of East Los Angeles, is also impacted by their community....
