As a writer and editor for Mira Costa High School’s student paper, La Vista, Landen Braunstein learned the power of journalism as a platform for peoples’ voices to be heard.
“Life is about meeting new people and learning new things, and journalism allows you to do both,” she said.
She has pursued her passion for journalism since her freshman year. In the fall, she will serve as La Vista’s executive news editor.
Naomi Dimalanta, Braunstein’s close friend of more than 10 years, said Braunstein is always in Mira Costa’s journalism room.
“She is so committed to writing and often spends her breaks, like snack and lunch, to work even harder,” said Dimalanta.
Braunstein said her involvement in La Vista opened pathways for new passions and gave her a strong sense of identity in today’s society. Being in her journalism class has allowed for new friendships, which contributes to her love for journalism.
“Coming up with story ideas has really tapped into the creative part of my mind that I wouldn’t have otherwise explored, and it’s given me a lot of confidence,” Braunstein said.
As a writer, Braunstein loves to use her platform to inform students about new topics and on-campus opportunities. She also likes meeting new people and giving students a voice and space to express themselves, which they otherwise may not have.
As a student journalist, Braunstein has navigated covering sensitive subjects.
In May, the South Bay community mourned Loyola High School student Braun Levi. Levi, who was 18 and one month away from graduation, was killed while walking with a friend in Manhattan Beach by a woman arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to the Times.
“It was nice to do something positive for this person,” she said. “When there are hard situations or when people are going through hard things … to let it be a platform for people to show support for them, for them to express themselves and hopefully heal.”
She said the most important part of journalism to her is finding the greater meaning in stories to allow the community to learn and grow.
Aside from journalism, Braunstein participates in Mira Costa’s Link Crew to promote school spirit around campus and support new incoming students. She said she’s very passionate about drama and musical theater, where she can express herself and have fun.
Outside of school, Braunstein enjoys watching baseball, particularly her favorite team, the Los Angeles Dodgers. In her free time, Braunstein likes to bake and spend time with her younger siblings, whom she said she works hard to be a good role model for.
“Landen is the most funny, loyal, kind, and genuine person you will ever meet in your life,” Dimalanta said.
