Part of being a pet owner is learning to care for pets through illness and injuries. Recently, many people have been worried about the mysterious dog virus that has been going around.
The last time my dog got sick, I could sense his fluffy white cotton ball-like face was filled with great pain. During this time, his stomach bloated more often than usual, and his friendly behavior was replaced with a downhearted attitude towards things such as playing with his favorite toys and eating.
It filled me with anxiety and worry, so I immediately rushed him to the vet. It turned out that he had a stomach issue, which was easily fixed with a change in diet and medication.
As owners, we have a right to worry about the well-being of our pets, especially this deadly disease. This mysterious canine disease has made me worry for my dog and other dogs.
For other worried dog owners, here are some of the symptoms. The mystery dog flu starts with fatigue, coughing, and sneezing. It can quickly develop into pneumonia. It seems similar to kennel cough but is more persistent and can’t be cured with the prescribed cough medicine. Dogs can still test negative for all of the usual respiratory illnesses.
So far, since 2023, the outbreak has shown up in Oregon, Colorado, Indiana, Illinois, Washington, Idaho and California.
Veterinarians are still unsure what causes it, but dogs can catch it from being in close contact with other dogs. It’s suggested that owners be cautious about bringing their dogs to the vet or dog parks where they are most vulnerable to exposure.
With this information, pet owners can help their furry companions stay safe and healthy while veterinarians work to figure out what is causing this strange new cough and illness.
